Karaghiozi?
Greeks Bearing Puppets!?

The Chicagoland Guild is working with the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center of Chicago to help in re-creating a Greek shadow puppetry performance for March, 2010.

This coffee house and community shadow puppetry tradition remained common in US Greek communities until the 1950s, but since has faded from view. It features the hapless everyman Karaghiozi, in traditional tales and songs, using remarkably colorful puppet characters (many with 180-degree hinged rods).

If you are familiar with this tradition, or know of a puppeteer in your community who still does these shows, we'd appreciate it if you'd get us in touch. E-mail chicagolandpuppetryguild@yahoo.com

A small charity near Chicago is looking for someone to do a short performance for a charity fundraiser in August.

The Aviation Celebration is held at the Schaumburg Regional Airport and it's set for Saturday and Sunday August 20th and 30th. All proceeds from the event go to the Woodfield Area Children's Organization. W.A.C.O. is a 100% volunteer 501(c)(3) not-for-profit group. We work with disadvantaged kids in northwest Cook and Kane counties.

This is our 7th Aviation Celebration and we're trying to add more things to attract people inside the gate. Unfortunately we do not have an entertainment budget, but we would certainly include the puppeteer's name in any advertising we do. I know this is asking a lot, but we figured it wouldn't hurt to try.

If you can help us out please contact me at geri313@comcast.net

La Jolla Playhouse Presents Dogugaeshi by Basil Twist

Dogugaeshi is an intimate work inspired by Japanese puppet theater created and performed by Obie Award-winning puppeteer Basil Twist. Visually and aurally stunning, this hour-long performance features Twist's signature puppetry, with video projection, and original live shamisen (Japanese traditional lute-like instrument) music. The dogugaeshi mechanism of sliding screens that create an unfolding of various images and landscapes was developed centuries ago as the climactic sequence in Japanese traditional puppet theater. Now only practiced in the region of Awaji in Japan, Basil Twist has recreated the intricate technique with his own interpretation, blending centuries of tradition with his own inimitable style. The result is a mesmerizing, powerful voyage through historical and contemporary Japan.

Join my Circus!

We’re looking for artists interested into making a new start… Are you a dreamer? A dancer? A professional weirdo who likes playing with dolls? Good cause we’re looking for people interested in building a dream. Some lifting involved… Interested parties must have a serious love for the art of puppetry. Newly formed non-profit Puppet Company is in need of puppeteers, workshop teachers and volunteers to help at our new center. In the city that insists on keeping it weird… Austin, TX.

Austin’s already a big music and film town; we’re making it a puppet town as well… Experienced puppet folk would be great but prefer training new ones (that way there’s more of us) other great candidates that work out great have a background in dance, theater, mime, performance art, or comedy… or a combination of any those. Oh and if you’re a puppet builder that’s even better. We’ll train you if you’re just into starting something new. The main thing is you have to love what you do… You don’t make a lot of money and it helps to have a straight job. We’re 2 years into our master plan and now we’ve open Austin’s first full time puppetry arts center at 1715 7 St. Austin, TX 78702. In two more years we’ll be able to make a living off of enriching the lives of others with this amazing art form.

We’re only looking for dreamers as this is something we love. So lets wrap up we’ve got the finances to produce shows, the equipment, access to grants, a great venue, workshops, a lot of caffeine and a ton of puppets… we just need a few more puppeteers to make it work… For those wanting to see what we do, go to www.geppettodreams.com

To set up an audition or to volunteer please call us at 512 358 4632

NO MORE SNOW BALLS FOR ME!

I’m into needle felting and have just finished my 27th snow ball. I want to experience more that needle felting has to offer. Can you help?

Dear Needled, Yes. This year at PuppetFest MidWest we are offering an advanced needle felting workshop. Read on. FELT & FIBER, PUPPETS & PROPS II - NEEDLE FELTING SEMINAR. For those with needle felting experience, this class will focus on planning and building a show, keeping in mind an awareness of basic art concepts.

“Needle felting is my favorite medium for constructing puppets,” says instructor Pam Corcoran, “ My puppet shop is cold in the winter, hot in the summer, and when it is most comfortable, I am busy in the schools. Needle Felted Puppets can be made in comfort! This method of puppet construction allows me to sit next to the window by the bird feeder in a most comfy chair with my feet up and a basket of soft, fluffy wool beside me, as I make a vast array of charming puppets WITHOUT getting wet, spreading stuff on every flat surface in the house, or getting poisoned!”
Learn the techniques involved in making needle felted puppets. If you have already been introduced to this style of construction, come again and learn some advanced techniques and try a different style of puppet. This method of puppet construction is very exploratory, and Pam encourages her students to do the same. Her goal for participants in this class is for them to learn a method of construction that is just the beginning of their experiences with needle felting. Although they may be focusing on hand puppets in the workshop, she will also show examples of other styles of puppets made by the same technique, and participants will have time to make an additional puppet of their choice.
Needle felting is a great project to do while sitting about and chatting. Each day, a different topic concerning puppet performance will be introduced. In addition to constructing puppets, getting to know one another and having intellectual conversations about the art of puppetry, the group will put something together for the Saturday sharing session.
So you know how to needle felt puppets. This independent study will encourage you to put that skill to use designing and building a show. Participants must have needle felting experience. Pam will be consulting with students before the Festival so that each student will arrive with definite goals, and Pam will have materials needed. Basic art concepts will be applied to the design process.
So this workshop is the answer to what to do after you can make a snowball. Space is limited in all workshops and at this small festival, so get your registration in soon. We hope to see you there.
This year’s PuppetFest MidWest (the 7th annual festival) is from Tuesday, July 7 through Sunday July 12, in Trenton, Missouri. Class size is small and so is the festival so get your registration in early, plus there are many more workshops offered. For more information, please see our website, listed below.

I want to spend more time with Paul Mesner!

Well you can spend at least 20 more hours with Paul if you attend PuppetFest MidWest. Now in its 7th year, this annual festival is always happy to present Paul as a teacher and performer. This year Paul offers: ROD PUPPETS and PERFORMANCE

In this workshop, you will build simple rod puppets, learn to manipulate them and create a short performance piece, ready to perform by the end of the week. As a performer and director, Paul Mesner has a unique sense of movement, dramatic timing and humor. Don’t leave your imagination at home, you will need it.

Rod puppets are a deceptively simple style of puppetry. You may think that anyone can move something around on a stick, but there is so much more to it than that. Paul Mesner is one of the leading rod puppet performers in the country. Be prepared to use a variety of tools to create these puppets. The workshop fee will cover all of the supplies you need to create the nucleus of your next puppet show.

This year’s PuppetFest MidWest is from Tuesday, July 7 through Sunday July 12, in Trenton, Missouri. For more information (THERE ARE LOTS MORE WORKSHOPS OFFERED), please see our website, www.puppetfestival.org

Our Commune is interested in doing puppetry together.

Have you come to the right place. This workshop at PuppetFest MidWest is just right for you all. TECHNIQUES IN TABLE-TOP (MULTI-PERFORMER) PUPPETRY Few forms of puppetry require multiple puppeteers to manipulate a single puppet character like table-top puppetry (a hybrid of the traditional Bunraku style). The table-top advantage of multiple puppeteers, when expertly performed, can break through confines of other more traditional forms of puppetry. While many traditional concepts of quality hand, rod and string puppetry can be applied to table top puppetry, a unique set of considerations must be taken into account when casting, directing, manipulating and building table-top puppets.
In this workshop, participants will become cast members in a performance of Grueneberger’s “Perspectives” that will take place at the end of the week. ” (visit www.puppetarts.com/ perspectives.htm to see video clips of “Perspectives” performed at “Here” Theater in New York City.) The rehearsal process will allow participants to experience and execute the principles of excellent table-top puppetry through a series of enjoyable exercises and rehearsal techniques.

Other topics to be covered include:
· Techniques in casting a table-top show
· Directing Methods for multi-performer puppets
· How to build table-top puppets that really work
· Staging for multi-performer puppets beyond the table-top
Number of participants: Minimum of 5 and a maximum of 12.

Hope that you and some of your commune buddies can make it. Please don’t forget to register early. This year’s PuppetFest MidWest is from Tuesday, July 7 through Sunday July 12, in Trenton, Missouri. For more information (THERE ARE LOTS MORE WORKSHOPS OFFERED), please see our website, listed below.

HOW LONG SHOULD THE STRINGS BE?????

I’m thinking of moving on from finger puppets to Marionettes. I have so many questions. I’m wondering if there is anywhere I could learn the building technique this summer???

Dear Questioneer, What you are looking for is MARIONETTE DESIGN ON PAPER, a workshop offered by Phillip Huber at PuppetFest MidWest. The goal of this workshop shall be to explore the structure and dynamic of the basic marionette figure, to reveal basic jointing and animation choices, and to learn how to transfer those choices to paper in a drafted design that yields precise patterns. This workshop will cover the basics of marionette design including body structure, jointing, and stringing.

Each participant will take the concept for their marionette character from initial idea and mental visualization to a complete drafted drawing with patterns. Although various construction techniques will be discussed, and debated, no 3-dimensional construction work will be attempted in this workshop. The focus is on helping the puppeteer to think in 3-dimensional terms while plotting and drafting the marionette form and joints on paper. (Due to space limitations, designs will be limited to marionettes 30 inches tall or smaller)

So this workshop is the answer to your prayers.

Cabaret Marionette Stage

I have a cabaret marionette stage I need to find a good home for. I would hate to destroy it, but I am planning on moving in the near future, and I don't have the space or need for it any longer. It is approx. 4' x 8' x 24"(off the ground). It all fits inside four cases and it has all the curtains. There is a backdrop with hooks behind the platform. This stage was originally made and used on cruise ships. This stage is very sturdy and sets up in about 15 minutes. I am not looking to sell it, but I am just looking for a good home for it. Pick up only in No. Cal.
