Great Small Works in search of Studio Rental Partner

Dear Friends in the New York City Area,
Our Great Small Works theater company has been looking for a new home for several months.  Our landlords raised the rent on our present studio leading us to look for new digs.   Surprisingly, In the midst of the frenetic and delightful madness of the 9th International Toy Theater Festival we recently produced, we learned that the same landlords could offer us a new space.  Great Small Works has found a new studio!  We are going to stay in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn and relocate to 45 Main Street.  The space will make a terrific new clubhouse, workshop, and lab for future productions.

We are thrilled.
We are also looking for a studio rental partner.

The space is approx 2,500 Rent-able Square Feet.  It has high ceilings, and space to rehearse, build or house an office.   Do you need space?  Do you know someone, or a magnificent organization that might want to combine forces with us?  We are looking to design the space in August for a September 1, 2010 move.  Please contact Jenny Romaine (646.207.5525, or romainejnyc[at]gmail.com) if you want to come see the spot, or know folks who might want to consider this partnership.

So Many Thanks,

John Bell and Jenny Romaine, for Great Small Works

DO YOU WANT A SOFT BODY ... marionette that is?

Aged veteran M’el Reum will teach you how to make, string and manipulate a soft body marionette. You will be sewing. You will be stuffing. You will be screwing (screweyes into wood). You will be bending wire (to create stops to restrict movement) and creating a working marionette that you can use and reproduce a whole cast of, when you get home. M’el is a treasure and we sure appreciate her at PuppetFest MidWest. She is one of our “go to” people and we are so happy that she has decided that she will teach this workshop. Back when M’el first started with marionettes they only had one string and look how far we and she have come. Reumer has it that during the class M’el may talk about her other artistic endeavors over the eons, cave painting, , the invention of the wheel etc. We are just kidding, M’el has forgotten more stuff about puppets than we can ever hope to remember. “OH BABY! YOU KNOW I WANT YOU TO BE IN CONTROL! TIE ME UP WITH THAT BRAIDED FISH LINE!”

Marionette Manipulation taught by Phillip Huber at PuppetFest MidWest, July 6 - 11, 2010. 20 hours of focused attention to making your puppet do what you want. The goal of the workshop is to demystify the process of marionette manipulation and performance. Here is a long quote from a past participant in this workshop. “The workshop was ... a GOOD thing. It’s not that often that one gets an opportunity to learn from a master, so I’m really pleased to have had the chance. Phillip is demanding but in a constructive way, and I think his comments of the intensive rehearsal time was very helpful. I also appreciate his willingness to answer every question, demonstrate every puppet, and let us have a chance to try out any and all of his figures. It was a fantastic experience”. It could be yours too. Check out past fest photos and other cool stuff at www.puppetfestival.org

Startup theater group in Washington, D.C., specializing in puppetry and other unconventional performance-modes, is mounting a pilot production for a major metro area festival at the French Embassy in mid-June. Those with acting, puppetry (voice work, etc.) and/or musical talent are invited to contact us; tryouts and at least one formal rehearsal date will follow, dates TBD.

Primarily hoping to connect with a puppeteer (or puppeteers), for a showcase involving various techniques; hand puppets, shadow puppets, etc. Initially, we’re looking for core cast/crew members interested in performing with a small troupe; versatility would be ideal, to help with set up and take down, running crew, etc.  A more full-scale production is in development, for local and potential out-of-town fringe festival programming. In other words, we’re planning for future, commercially-based projects as we go.

For more information, please email phantomlimbproductions[at]yahoo.com and list “French Embassy show” in the subject line.

Lincoln Center Theater is SEEKING PUPPETEERS for its upcoming production of WAR HORSE

Lincoln Center Theater is SEEKING PUPPETEERS for its upcoming production of WAR HORSE, which it will produce at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in New York with The National Theatre of Great Britain, whose critically acclaimed production has been running in London to great success.

The puppets and puppetry in War Horse are created by the Handspring Puppet Company of South Africa. The puppets, which are hand made from wood, cane and aluminum, require strong, versatile performers with an open mind. Handspring's mechanisms have been developed over 25 years of puppet design, drawing on traditional African, Japanese and German mechanisms, and puppeteers will not be expected to have specific experience with these puppets. The puppets are substantial and are operated by three performers thinking, breathing and improvising together; the aesthetic of the puppet performance is one of understatement and observation of genuine animal behavior. The puppeteers will need to be good actors and versatile stage performers with experience of working in an ensemble and with adult audiences.  They will have to be dedicated puppeteers with an emphasis on subtlety and fine detail. A high level of physical fitness, endurance and strength is essential for these roles.

Please send picture and resume and/or bio. In addition to your professional experience, please make sure to list/describe all training. Also, please note your height,  note if you speak any French or German (this is not a requirement, but useful information) and if you have any proficiency with specific musical instruments (again, not a requirement).

Information should be sent to:
War Horse Casting
Lincoln Center Theater
150 W. 65th Street
New York, NY  10023

Or emailed to:
warhorsecasting[at]lct.org

War Horse is based on a novel by Michael Morpurgo, Adapted by Nick Stafford
Directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris

Performers are employed under an Actors Equity Association LORT A+ contract.

Rehearsals: 1/20/2011 (approx)
Previews: 3/17/2011

Sandglass Theater and The University of Connecticut's Puppet Arts Program are offering an intensive three-week Puppet Arts Training Program

Sandglass Theater and The University of Connecticut's Puppet Arts Program are offering an intensive three-week Puppet Arts Training Program June 27 - July 17, 2010. The workshop will be offered to puppeteers, teachers, actors, directors, designers and writers who want to expand and deepen their skill and understanding in the art of the puppet.

Sandglass Theater believes that the puppet, as a theatrical medium, unlocks doors to our more secret sides and to integrating parts of ourselves. This includes the worlds of our dreams and memories, as well as all the metaphorical possibilities of theater.

The objective of the training program is to inspire theater artists to understand and to experience the puppet at a theatrical medium. Sandglass believes in integrating this understanding of the puppet within the larger picture of expressive theater. Sandglass teaches a method of manipulation developed in over 19 years of workshops in Europe and America. Key to the training is the link between the approach to manipulation and the content of the performed work.

Classes during the intensive will be scheduled for five and a half days per week. Daily sessions will include body training and breath development with relation to puppet performance, training in manipulation technique an its relation to artistic statement, and training and discussion in theory and aesthetics. All sessions, including improvisation workshops, will provide the opportunity for participants to develop their own pieces. Participants will also receive open workshop time for puppet building. The program will include evening and weekend sessions with Sandglass company members and guests on a variety of subjects. Space and other resources will be available during other times for participants to rehearse and develop their pieces. The workshop will lead to informal public showings.

They Gotta Be Secret Agents presents: Poste Restante

Charlestown, MA
May 6-8

They Gotta Be Secret Agents presents: Poste Restante

May 6th - 8th 2010
Thursday and Friday at 8pm, Saturday at 2pm and 8pm.

The Charlestown Working Theater, 442 Bunker Hill St, Charlestown, MA
$20 general, $18 students and seniors
866-811-4111

A madly inventive mix of acrobatics, paper, laughter, dance, flight, puppetry, longing, and film...all stuffed neatly into a box.

They Gotta Be Secret Agents (aka Bonnie Duncan & Tim Gallagher) perform a brilliantly imaginative form of physical theater, effortlessly moving back and forth between acrobatics, puppetry and dance. Their poetically beautiful, absurdly logical show is by turns funny, dazzling, and, in the end, surprisingly poignant.  Segments include Return to Sender: Tim attempts to stuff Bonnie in a box and mail her. Air Mail: A stop-motion animation tracks the delivery of a love letter via origami postal bird. The Last Mile: Bonnie and Tim struggle with distance and awkwardness as they dance impossibly close. By Lamplight: A sentimental table lamp prods Bonnie into responding to a love letter.

Please visit: http://www.the-secret-agents.com for more information.

We also have shows coming up in Prague (May 28-June 5), Dresden (June 10-12), and NYC (July 16-18).

Do you need a volunteer for programs near Richmond Virginia?

Do you create and produce non-religious programs near Richmond, Virginia, that help people find constructive and effective ways to deal with the challenges in their lives?  (Like the Kids on the Block programs.) Do you have tasks that could be delegated to a volunteer who could work with your team an average of 10 hours a week?  I'm a semi-retired science writer with experience with "educational" programs for children in schools and at Nature Camps.  I have had very good success with creating crude impromptu hand puppets and using them for interactive presentations for kids and adults.  I do best with only a topic outline and the freedom to create the script on the fly in response to the needs and interests of the audience.  I would consider spending up to half of my volunteer time making puppets and sets or writing scripts for other puppeteers to use.  (I am not available for office work, advertising, or maintaining your web site.) Email me at sjdadams+puppeteer [at] gmail [dot] com.
