Session 1: Thursday, August 4th (9:00a-10:30a)

Boot Camp for Table Top Puppets with Cherie Panek

A workshop in table top puppetry will help introduce participants to the style and nuances of working with Table Top Puppets. This workshop also will help prepare participants for competing in the Puppet Athalon.* Participants will explore breath, focus, the quality of movement, and working as a team. Puppets with human form will be provided for the Boot Camp. Be prepared to move, have fun and explore the style of table top puppetry!

*Participants of the Boot Camp who wish to enter the lottery for The Puppet-Athlon will receive three entries as a reward for their hard-earned training.

Designing Black Beauty with Annett Mateo

Follow along with master puppet artist Annett Mateo as she takes us through her journey making the gorgeous horse puppet cast of SCT's acclaimed production of Black Beauty. She'll describe the challenges and triumphs of the design and building phases, answer your questions, and share lots of pictures. This project was featured in the Fall 2019 Puppetry Journal.

Restorative Rolling for Puppeteers with Sarah Carr

Learn a routine of stretches, mobility exercises, and targeted self-massage techniques using soft pinky balls that can help prevent pain, preserve mobility, and improve your performance as a puppeteer or puppet builder! Find out more about your muscles, joints, and fascia and how you can take care of your body so that you can move better through life, with more ease and less discomfort.

Recycled Robots: Making Puppets in Libraries and Classrooms with Cheryl Hadley

Participants will build two basic and very different puppets—a rod puppet robot and a polyfoam puppet with a moving mouth—which they can finish embellishing on their own with materials provided at the workshop. Presenter will discuss techniques for making these kinds of puppets with children in classroom and library settings, with emphasis on advance preparation, amassing materials, finding proper tools, setting up a room, safety issues, and teaching basic puppet movement.  Participants will receive a resource packet that includes detailed instructions and lists of materials and vendors.

Puppet Magic, Part 1

Explore the joy of puppet performance with Lee Armstrong. This workshop is part demo and part “hands-on” puppetry and focuses on the question “What do you do once you have a puppet on your hand?” It’s ideal for newish puppeteers, actors, teachers, librarians, youth group leaders and teens interested in art and performance. You’ll leave this workshop with more confidence and skill in your puppet performance!

Puppet technique will build on UNIMA-USA award-winning Nikki Tilroe’s 4 Basic Principles to bring a puppet to life, then on to character development, voices, mouth sync. etc. Demo and tips on performing in a small group setting without a stage. Explore puppet performance that can be adapted for libraries, classrooms, stage, etc. for fun, and to bring stories and curriculum to life.

Learn how to build your own Roser-style scarf marionette and bring it to life in this fun, hands-on workshop! Award-winning artist Sarah Frechette will share wisdom from the String Academy, drawing on her years of study with German master puppeteer Albrecht Roser. You'll be amazed at how simple, elegant, and expressive a marionette can be. All participants will take home a completed scarf marionette and the basic movement vocabulary needed to create a solo performance.

Stop Motion with Shannon Reagan

Come learn the well loved craft of stop motion animation using common items and the smart and useful devices you use every day! Get started creating your first very short stop motion film. Bring your devices (tablet or smart phone) with you and be prepared to download some free apps.

Session 4: Friday, August 5th (11:00a-12:30p) 

Puppet Magic, Part 2:  (Part 1 is not required)

Explore more joy of puppet performance with Lee Armstrong. This workshop is part demo and part “hands-on” puppetry for teens and adults with some puppet performance experience, or who have taken “One Puppet Magic.” Puppet technique will continue from “One Puppet Magic” for performance with, and without a stage. It will include: subtleties of eye focus and mouth synch, action and reaction, different types of walks, entrances & exits, working with another puppeteer, sharing space and more. This movement class can also be useful for a person interested in TV puppetry.

Cinematic Shadow Puppetry Techniques

Puppetry artists Cassandra Bray & Zane Exactly will lead participants through a 1.5-hour workshop, using overhead projectors and a projection screen to explore cinematic shadow puppetry techniques.

Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to closely observe and engage with different cinematic techniques, including: framing, fades, transitional overlays, dissolves, match cuts, and cutaways. Participants will refine their story-telling techniques while exploring the different ways that puppetry and cinema are intertwined.

Please note that this is a hands-on workshop, geared toward participants who already have a basic understanding of the fundamentals of shadow puppetry design and manipulation.

New technology has made it easier than ever to practice and shoot puppet videos, but it has also made it easier to "cheat". In this workshop, we will go through the dynamics of performing hand puppetry for a camera and monitor, going beyond just flipping left and right and exploring how to use the video frame to your advantage.
